2. DAY EIGHT RECAP: GIVE ME STRENGTH! AFI FEST'S GOOD TIMES HAVE NO END!

Could it be? Is this weekend the end of the rainbow? The last dance? The final frontier?

Hardly. The fun at AFI FEST has only just begun, with US and World premieres, a non-stop screening schedule and courtyard music and dance events continuing this weekend, all day and night on Saturday and Sunday - with no sign of slowing down until the break of dawn on Monday morning!

And, if Thursday night's screening and events are any indication, this weekend could be the most important on any film lover's calendar.

Early in the evening, a go-for-broke party raised the roof of the ArcLight Hollywood. Sponsored by the Film Offices of the Hawaiian Islands, the soiree featured enticing hula dancers and delicious sake. "This is so cool!" said one guest, one of the many attractive ladies attending the party.

As AFI FEST excitement swept through the Hawaiian party, a different kind of passion erupted in Theater 10, where UNPRECENTED, a revealing documentary chronicling the 2000 elections, was just finishing. At the Q and A, a level-headed discussion with filmmakers Richard Ray Perez and Joan Sekler quickly turned into a full-scale political rally. One woman, a lifelong Democrat, yelled at one point "It doesn't matter if we vote for cats as long as we vote!" This comment fanned the flames even more (especially among dog lovers), and before long, moderator Amy Nicholson was desperately trying to restore order among the firebrands.

Meanwhile, an HBO party celebrating AFI FEST's Screen Education program was in progress. Threading their way through both the older and younger filmmakers, servers offered the carousers irresistible hors d'oeuvres. Eric Forrest, a filmmaker, was impressed. "This is fancy!" Forrest exclaimed. "And this is definitely the best [film festival] I've been to. Not far from Eric, Nirvan Mullick, director of BOX MAN, closely examined the tray of delicacies. His appearance at last night's HBO affair was one of the few times he's been seen without a box on his head. Just beyond him, AFI FEST dynamo and all-around superstar Peggy Ellithorpe floated through the party with a smile and a bottomless glass of wine. "The Tibetan Monks have arrived!" Even the Dalai Lama, at his most reserved, would have a hard time resisting the party's pleasures and thrills.

Last night's HBO soiree was one of the high points of AFI FEST's Screen Education Program. Sponsored by HBO, and supported in part by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Program, the series of screenings and events, attended by hundreds of Los Angles-area high school students, featured Wednesday's special screening of Lee Jeong-Hyang's THE WAY HOME; and Thursday's screening of HBO 30 BY 30 SHORT SPOTS, a selection of short films by some of the best young filmmakers (under 18) in the country. On Friday, AFI FEST and HBO hosted an impressive retrospective of the work of Chaille Stoval, a veteran thirteen-year-old auteur, who revealed his own approach to filmmaking at an informative Q and A after the screening. When asked what advice he had for filmmakers of his own generation, Stoval, who, like the Dalai Lama, is not partial to ornamental language, responded, "Make sure you have everything you need."

3. DAY NINE: AFI FEST'S RAINBOW LASTS ALL WEEKEND!

Directed by Phillip Noyce.

EVENHAND, November 15, 10:00 p.m.
American Directions

Directed by Joseph Pierson, EVENHAND is a devastating film that follows Officers Francis and Morning around San Lavisa, as they eat muffins, investigate automobile accidents and ultimately recognize that danger and boredom are hazardous bedfellows.

CIVIL BRAND, November 16, 6:15 p.m.

With shocking frankness and disarming humor, Lukas Stepanik and Robert Schindel's GEBETIG deftly tales the personal stories of victims, culprits and those who came after, as they try to shoulder the burden of history and come to terms with their never-ending past.

Co-Director Lukas Stepanik will participate in a Q and A after the screening.

MILENNIUM ACTRESS, November 17, 6:30 p.m.

Directed by renowned anime director Satoshi Kon, MILENNIUM ACTRESS is a compelling and visually stunning romance/adventure where fantasy and reality converge in an epic saga spanning a millennium.
