AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center is a unique film and video exhibition space offering an unsurpassed, richly eclectic program of international first-run and repertory cinema. AFI Silver connects a diverse regional audience with the best the art form has to offer in a state-of-the-art and architecturally significant screening environment, in the heart of Silver Spring, Maryland, eight miles from the White House.

AFI DOCS is an international festival and conference held in June that promotes documentary film as a leading art form, supports the work of independent filmmakers and fosters an atmosphere for public dialogue and civic engagement around the issues and ideas explored in the films. AFI DOCS is looking for energetic, organized people with excellent communication skills who are willing to commit at least 10-20 hours a week. Internships are unpaid, but school credit is available.

AFI DOCS Internship Descriptions

Marketing & Operations Internship (2014)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Responsibilities include general departmental support and assisting with a wide range of marketing initiatives, including advertising campaign tracking with print, TV, radio, online partners and street teams. Intern works directly with AFI DOCS Marketing Manager and/or Production and Operations Manager. This is an administrative job, but with lots of room to grow and learn.

SKILLS NEEDED:

An eager self-starter who doesn't mind lots of office work and computer time. Must enjoy juggling multiple projects with rapidly shifting priorities. Good phone and computer skills are essential, with a fluency in Mac OS X, Word, and Excel. Research, organizational and communication skills are a big plus.

Video and Technical Internship (2014)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Assist the Technical Director with logging and editing video shot during the 2014 AFI DOCS film festival and various AFI Silver film programs. Also, provide general administrative assistance to the Technical Director and Video Systems Manager, including filing, labeling and archiving tapes. This internship is a great opportunity to work closely with AFI DOCS and AFI Silver technical staff in the state-of-the-art video production studio at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center -- the most technologically advanced theatrical venue in the United States!

SKILLS NEEDED:

An eager self-starter with excellent time-management skills and knowledge of video production. Mac and Final Cut Pro knowledge a must. Knowledge of Pro Tools, Soundtrack, and other audio and video editing software a plus. Should be highly detail-oriented and eager to learn.

Programming Internship (2014)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Programming department creates the slate of Festival films, and is the front line for all filmmakers interested in participating in AFI DOCS. Programming interns will get an insider's view of the selection process for a large competitive film festival.

Interns will help to research upcoming documentary projects, prepare materials for outreach to other festivals, and assist with the organization of films submitted to the Festival, including files, tape library and submission database. Interns will also help answer filmmakers' questions about the festival, assist with year-round programming events, and review submitted films for potential inclusion in Festival.

SKILLS NEEDED:

A self-directed worker with an interest in film who wants to learn more about the film industry. Interest in/knowledge of documentaries is preferred. Written and spoken communication skills, with fluency in Mac OS X, Word, Excel essential; FileMaker Pro a plus. Must be able to lift boxes up to 30 pounds. Clerical (phones, faxes, mail, copies, filing, internet research) & data entry experience. Regular access to a DVD player. This is largely an administrative position, but can expand depending on your interests, availability and strengths.

Special Programs Internship

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Work directly with the AFI DOCS Special Programs Producer.

Before the Festival

  • Administrative support which could include gathering bios and photographs from panelists and speakers and determining the technical media requirements for their presentations, assisting in the preparation of name badges and registration packages, managing RSVPs for numerous social events.
  • Assisting Special Programs Producer, Ticketing & Registration Manager and Lists Manager in duties as assigned.

During the Festival

  • Administrative Support – to continue activities outlined above and to assist Venue Stage Managers.
  • Registration support

Development & Sponsorship Internship

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Works closely with Development & Sponsorship Senior Manager and Development & Sponsorship Coordinator.

  • Helps insure smooth flow of sponsorship events and correspondence with high profile sponsors
  • Act as the liaison between the Festival and high profile sponsors
  • Staffs sponsorship events
  • Solicits prizes and swag
  • Tracks all deliverables to and from sponsors and Festival team
  • Assists with sponsorship mailings and post Festival acknowledgments
  • Database management/record keeping
  • Verifies correct spelling, branding and logos for sponsor on Festival materials
