Heston at the Silver Theatre

Charlton Heston (1924-2008)

Epic.

Among the volumes of adjectives that could celebrate Charlton Heston - that's the word that seems to say it all.

Epic in his screen presence.

Epic in heart and mind.

And epic in his support for the American Film Institute.

Mr. Heston was, for many years, the bedrock upon which the AFI stands proud and tall. He served both as Chairman of the AFI Board of Trustees from 1972 to 1982, and then as President from 1982 to 1999. In these roles, he was an advocate before Congress in support of funding for the arts, he fought with unparalleled eloquence to hold and uphold a standard of excellence for the art form, and he inspired the next generation of storytellers at the AFI Conservatory.

Though the loss to American film is epic too, Charlton Heston's legacy will live on - as long as there is an American Film Institute to educate and to honor film artists everywhere.
